Though our TV show watchlist might be suffering at the moment, the internet offers a cornucopia of trailers meant to give us narrative hope for the months to come. Taboo is one of those options.
Taboo is coming to FX in January and it features Tom Hardy (Mad Max, Inception, The Revenant) getting down and dirty back in 1814. Hardy plays James Keziah Delaney, a man who has changed drastically from who he used to be after spending enough time in Africa for those from his hometown in London to presume that he’s dead. Now he’s back, and he’s quite the force to be reckoned with. The show is co-produced between BBC One and FX, having debuted its first trailer in February.
The official synopsis reads:
Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father’s legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.
“You look the same,” Hardy’s character is told amid cut scenes of various people shocked to see him, saying that they thought he was dead.
“I’m not,” he replies.
Although, whatever was done to try to kill Hardy’s main character in the past didn’t work out, he is still a target. “That man will hang for treason,” one man shouts in the trailer. “Just kill him,” yells another.
The miniseries was created by Steven Knight, Tom Hardy and his father Chips. Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer on the eight-episode series. The first four episodes were directed by Kristoffer Nyholm. Hardy and Knight previously collaborated on the film Locke and BBC Two drama Peaky Blinders, which streams on Netflix in the U.S.
The series also stars Jonathan Pryce, Oona Chaplin, Stephen Graham, Michael Kelly, Jessie Buckley, David Hayman, Tom Hollander, Jason Watkins, Franka Potente, Jefferson Hall, Ed Hogg, Leo Bill, Christopher Fairbank, Richard Dixon, Mark Gatiss, Nicholas Woodeson, Lucian Msamati and Robert Parker.
Taboo will premiere on Jan. 7 in the U.K. and Jan. 10 on FX in the U.S.
